Review of Wikipedia page on Shri Rahul Gandhi

The article below is a review of the Wikipedia page on Shri Rahul Gandhi
(Refer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rahul_Gandhi)

Shri Rahul Gandhi is the Vice-President of the Indian National Congress (INC) party and the Chairperson of the Indian Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India. Shri Rahul Gandhi served as a general secretary in the All India Congress Committee and represents Amethi as its Member of Parliament (MP). He is the second-highest ranked member of the Congress Working Committee. Shri Rahul Gandhi comes from the politically influential Nehru–Gandhi family. His great grandfather Jawahar Lal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of independent India and his grandmother, Indira Gandhi and his father, Rajiv Gandhi are also both former Prime Ministers of India.
I had the personal privilege to be part of his campaign team in the last general elections in India in May 2014 and led the Operations and Publicity aspects of the campaign including media as well as social media.

Therefore I am keenly interested in making this page better as Mr. Rahul Gandhi is a national as well as international figure any online profile should be easily understandable, comprehensive, neutral and verifiable. Thus the key parameters on which this article will be reviewed are as below:
  1. Readability: Whether the article flows well starting with the lead where it provides a short introduction of the article
  2. Comprehensiveness and Formatting: Whether the article has enough information on the person featured and whether it is divided into logical sections which cover the gamut of information about the individual
  3. Sourcing - References: Whether the references provided are adequate or more references could be provided and are they accurate?
  4. Sourcing - External links: Whether relevant external links are associated with the article to supplement what is written in Wikipedia
  5. Illustrations: Whether appropriate images and adequate number of pictures have been associated with the article, giving an idea to the reader in images about the person about whom the page is written
  6. Neutrality: Is the article written from a neutral point of view?
I will analyze the Wikipedia page on Shri Rahul Gandhi on each these parameters.

Readability: The article falters at the very outset with the lead being too long! The observation is provided not only by me but by Wikipedia itself. From the 2nd para itself, the lead actually launches into early lie which could easily be merged with the section on early life. The lead instead should have one more paragraph describing his current position and his political journey till date including key achievements and key failures.
Moving on the article is not very readable in terms of its structure. By that I mean that it does not provide the reader a clear image of the person on whom the article is written. Instead it seems to be an article which is sometimes chronological and sometimes descriptive in an all encompassing sense, without leaving the leader with a central theme or course of thought. It does not even leave a reader with a clear message of the set of ideologies which are dear to Mr. Gandhi. There are passing references to poverty and corruption but they are mere stubs and need to be developed further under  a proper overarching structure for the article.
Comprehensiveness and Formatting: While the article has multiple sections including sections on "Early life and Career", "Political Career" etc. I feel that the article is neither comprehensive nor does it exhibit a clear structure.
The comprehensiveness and the structure can be further improved, hand in hand as is suggested below.
If we take the 2nd and 3rd para from the lead and get it into a new section called "Early life and Education", that will help organize one aspect of his biography. "Early professional career" could be a section unto itself. This could then be followed by "Early Political Career" which may include the first 4 paragraphs of the current section on "Political Career" which is currently very confusing thus failing to give the reader a clear insight into the political journey of Mr. Rahul Gandhi. This could be followed by a section on his initiatives as "General Secretary AICC" having sub sections on 2007 Uttar Pradesh elections, Youth Politics and Student Politics. This can then be followed by major events like the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Elevation as Congress Vice President and the 2014 elections.
The article clearly lacks enough substance on his Political views with some of his most critical ideologies not even finding a mention like women empowerment, decentralization of power through Panchayati Raj system etc.
Lastly, the section on Personal life seems to be just a stub with just a line written about his girlfriend. This can be enriched further with his hobbies, interests etc. This information is widely available in media and even on the Member of Parliaments official profile page of Mr. Rahul Gandhi (refer: http://164.100.47.132/LssNew/Members/Biography.aspx?mpsno=4074)
Sourcing - References: While there are adequate number of references available, the latest references themselves are at least 5 months old thus are not reflective of the latest state of politics in India. These could be updated and new references added to the social work with which Mr. Rahul Gandhi is involved through the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation including political decentralization and women empowerment.
Sourcing - External Links: The external links is something where I really got shocked. The link that is listed as his official website opens a webpage, the snapshot of which is given below.
This is clearly not the website of the leader of the largest and oldest political party in India. The link to the Congress party website is missing altogether (refer: http://inc.in/LeaderProfile.aspx?Id=997&&Org=Profile) as well as the profile link to the Government of India's website for Members of Parliament (refer: http://164.100.47.132/LssNew/Members/Biography.aspx?mpsno=4074). This needs to be corrected.
Illustration: Lastly, this is another area which sorely needs improvement. The entire page has one profile picture which is good but other than that there is some random picture of Mr. Gandhi meeting a former Greek Prime Minister and that's it. For a national figure of his stature, there needs to be more pictures of him depicting his work in his constituency, during campaigns, during social work initiatives etc. This will add richness to his profile and allow people to know him beyond just words.
Neutrality: On this count, the article does fairly well. It is indeed written from a neutral albeit under-informed, under-researched point of view. The extent to which the information is present is non biased and neutral in tone also.

Overall I think the page needs substantial improvement to reflect the stature of the person about whom the page has been created. My rating of the page on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being very poor and 5 being excellent is 1.5.

The Dystopia that is Uttar Pradesh

How willful ignorance and distortion of facts is endangering millions in rural Uttar Pradesh Babloo Yadav’s brother-in-law died a few days ago. When the author inquired about the cause, the pained reply was, “Pata nahin bhaiya, bukhar tha”. Doctor kuch bata nahin paye,” roughly translates to, “We don’t know, he had a fever, the doctors could not diagnose.” This is a pattern that is repeating in millions of homes across rural Uttar Pradesh where people are supposedly dying of fever, typhoid, pneumonia, or whatever else they choose to assume in the absence of testing and clear diagnosis.  A state of dystopia is characterized by unimaginable suffering, totalitarianism, willful ignorance of the rulers towards the misery of their subjects, and distortion of facts to hide reality. Now let us examine whether Uttar Pradesh meets these dystopian parameters. Unimaginable Suffering The images of bodies floating in rivers in Uttar Pradesh across multiple districts, cremation grounds runn...

The human tragedy that is the National Register of Citizens (India)

In most countries across the world, a residence record spanning nearly 50 years, a record of service to the society in various capacities such as being a veteran, regular tax filing for decades, law-abiding behaviour etc. should be more than enough to prove citizenship, NOT in India though. A career soldier , a serving doctor , a mother who is deemed an Indian citizen but her daughters are not , a brother whose real brother is a citizen but he is an illegal immigrant , a sitting member of Legislative Assembly  in Assam excluded and even an ex President's family being omitted are some of the stories emanating from the unending human tragedy that is the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process in Assam. Authorities in the northeastern state of Assam have published a citizenship list that aims to identify genuine citizens and seeks to exclude "Bangladeshi immigrants". "Bangladeshi immigrants" are defined as all those who are unable to provide documentary ...

The Case For Printing More Money & Distributing It!

What I will argue for in this article is quite unorthodox and contrary to the conventional economic arguments that we are used to. I propose that in order to tide over the COVID 19 crisis and kick start the economy; the government should consider printing money and transferring the equivalent amount directly into the thirty crore Jan Dhan accounts. This will work to seamlessly ensure that the money reaches the masses while acting as a stimulant to revive demand. In economic terms, we call it monetizing the fiscal deficit that is a red herring in traditional economic logic, as most economists would rightly argue against printing money to finance deficits, citing inflation as a major concern.  The reason is that printing more money doesn’t increase economic output – it only increases the amount of cash circulating in the economy. If more money is printed, consumers are able to demand more goods, but if firms have still the same amount of goods, they will respond by putting up p...
